This region of Alaska is the most untouched area of the State. It is made up of thousands of miles of unexplored country, rugged mountains, mushy tundra, uncharted rivers and streams. It is the only part of this huge state that is not touched by seawater. It has one of the largest rivers in the world running through the middle of it, the mighty Yukon. In the Gold Rush years (the late 19th century) its population was greater than it is today. |
