Juneau’s Mendenhall Glacier

Southeast Alaska

This region of Alaska contains Juneau, the state capital of Alaska. Most of the area is covered in thick forests that reach from the waters of the inside passage to the tree line of the high peaks that separate Canada and Alaska. Accessing this part of Alaska can be done by either flying in or boarding a boat. The northern part of this area can be reached by car from Whitehorse in Canada or you can drive in to Haines from the north section of the Alcan Highway.

Mendenhall Glacier Visitors Center The center was built in 1962, the first visitor center in the National Forest System. The original structure was primarily a large observatory where people could get out of the rain and look at the glacier.
